Dental Cleaning

Man receiving dental cleaning from dental hygienistHaving regular teeth cleaning through brushing and flossing is a good oral hygiene practice. However, this is not enough because the normal toothbrush and flossers are not able to get rid of the hardened plaque. Over time, the plaque that is forming on the tooth surfaces and under the gum line will harden to form tartar. It is for this reason you are advised to see our dentist for a professional cleaning. It helps remove dental plaque that has formed in the hard-to-reach areas such as below the gum line. Our dental team at Michelle Hedgecock, DDS provides teeth cleaning to prevent dental problems such as tooth decay, gingivitis, and periodontitis.

Benefits of Professional Dental Cleanings

Our dentist recommends having professional teeth cleaning done twice a year, meaning every six months in order to ensure adequate oral hygiene. For people with serious dental problems, more frequent visits may be advised. In-office dental cleanings help brighten your smile by removing built-up stains from foods and drinks like coffee, tea, and wine or habits like smoking. These cleanings help reduce bad breath and prevent cavities. When you keep up with your professional dental cleanings, you prevent tooth loss.

Dental Cleaning Procedure

During a dental cleaning procedure, our hygienist does scaling and planing. The dental hygienist starts by doing a physical exam of your mouth to check for issues such as gingivitis or cavities. Scaling helps eliminate plaque and tartar while planing smoothes out the roots of the teeth to get rid of rough surfaces that encourage the buildup of plaque. The dentist removes plaque in areas below and above the gums ensuring that the bottom areas of the gum pockets are properly cleaned. During root planing, the hygienist uses special equipment to smoothen the roots, allowing gums to reattach. You may need local anesthesia to ensure you stay comfortable during the procedure.
